French Cuff Shirts for a Special Touch
In the second part of the 20th century, the popularity of French cuff shirts seemed to wane, as people began to favour the more informal barrel cuff. However, the last decade has seen a resurgence of the French cuff, with politicians, celebrities, sports players and lawyers leading the way for them to make a remarkable comeback.
French cuffs were so seldom worn that many young men actually don’t know what they are. At Calibre, we love that these sophisticated pieces of attire are making their way back into popular culture. Our crisp, French cuff link shirts offer a touch of style and difference that we believe should be a staple for every gent’s wardrobe.
What are the Different Types of Cuffs?
We understand that French cuffs haven’t been the standard of late, and knowing what the difference is between the cuffs can be problematic. The different types of cuff on men’s shirts include:
- Barrel cuffs: Barrel cuffs, or button cuffs, are a single, short cuff that has buttonholes on one side of the cuffs and buttons that connect on the other. They can have anything from between 1 to 3 buttons and even more at times. They wrap around the wrist and sit flat. Barrel cuffs are the standard style worn by men today in their everyday lives and even to some formal events. There’s a variety of shapes and sizes when it comes to buttons and this makes them a versatile choice with everyday practicality.
- Single link cuffs: Unlike button cuffs, link cuffs have holes in both cuff sides, which are meant to be connected by links. The material is still single-layered and wraps around the wrist. These have been worn by men recently to white and black-tie events and other formal occasions.
- French cuffs: French cuffs, or double cuffs, are twice as long as the other kind of cuffs and are worn folded back onto themselves. There are holes on both sides of the cuff that go all the way through the material. A cufflink is inserted in the holes to connect the folded fabric and the result is a teardrop finish that sits away from the wrist.
