Portis Wasp, the fashion pack’s go-to mixed media artist, talks style, social media and Calibre’s SS19 campaign.
It is well known that Mr Portis Wasp is one of the most eclectic fashion artists out there. Inspired by pop art and all things fashion, he creates bold collages that are playful, sensual and celebrity bound. Gigi Hadid, Henry Cavill and Jamie Dornan have all been subjects of the Scotsman’s playful eye since his meteoric rise in the fashion world. We caught up with Portis Wasp as he remixed the Calibre spring/summer ‘19 collection campaign. Watch the SS19 campaign video and read our exclusive Q&A below:
What first inspired you to pursue a career in art?
I’ve always wanted to do something creative, but my current career trajectory was quite accidental really. I was a little fed up with feeling like I should be posting a lot of what everyone else seemed to be oversharing on social media at the time, so I thought I'd instead start creating content myself for my Instagram. I started making and posting collages and soon after people from the fashion industry began to reach out and commission me.
What is the art scene like in Scotland?
I’m not sure to be honest. I think I might spend too much time creating my own art!!
Do you think social media has been fundamental in building your portfolio?
Of course! Thanks to Instagram I’ve been able to share my work with people from all over the world from a small village in Scotland and whilst hard work and leaning into my talents have contributed in building my career over the last couple of years, I’d be nothing without a great platform to share my work on. It really has been invaluable and I’m grateful for how everyone has responded to my work online.
How would you describe your style?
“Could try harder.” Haha. I think I scrub up alright if the occasion calls for it but I keep my style pretty simple most of the time: t-shirt, jeans, sweater and a nice cologne.
Do you have a style icon?
I don’t think anyone inspires my style but I do like how all the Hollywood bad boys dress; think classic wardrobe staples worn with plenty of attitude.
What was your favourite piece from the Calibre SS19 lookbook you shot?
Whilst each piece is versatile enough to wear with other items from the collection, I really like how the navy jacket and trousers matched with the white t-shirt come together. I love how effortlessly cool the outfit looks.
