The Calibre Man's Guide to Luxury Island Escapes
It's official - winter has well and truely hit home. Whether your facing torrential rains or bitter mornings, it is getting harder and harder to go about our daily lifes without cursing winter whenever we have to brave the elements.
Unfortunately mother nature is pretty persistent, and will unleash her wintery wrath on us for a few too many more long months. The solution? Pack your things Men of Calibre, it's time to escape.
There is no better time to pack a bag and buy a plane ticket to somewhere beautiful and sunny than right this very second. We have compiled a list of some of the most idyllic places you can warm your weary heads, from your private beach front villa in the Maldives to a bedroom under the ocean.
PS: For those of you not fortunate enough to actually escape - we suggest making one of the beauties your office screensaver and turning the heating up to a balmy 30 degree. It's like you're really there - almost.
Huvafen Fushi - Maldives
Although pictures alone of this idyllic resort will have you booking flights, the most exceptional parts are those not show in pictures. For example, are you sick of having to wait in long queues at reception to check in and out? Huvafen Fushi doesn’t have a reception – instead your 24/7 butler is at your service to do it all for you. Hate the hustle of resort life? There are only 44 modern bungalows and pavilions on the whole private island. Hate shoes? The resort encourages you to leave your shoes in your suitcase and venture around the resort bare foot. Your stay will be dotted with diving, sunset fishing, whale shark spotting, massages in the underwater spa, and dining on a pontoon in the middle of the ocean with nurse sharks under your feet. We swear this is a real place.
The Underwater Room – Tanzania
Gentlemen, this resort really is the stuff of dreams. If what you’re after is a true escape from your reality, you can’t get further with the Manta Resort on Pemba Island. While guests should not expect the same 5-star luxury that other islands resorts now offer, they offer something better. Peace and quiet. No fancy bells and whistles, but rather an intimate, family style atmosphere, completely cut off from the rest of the world. Diving is the pass-time of choice, with one of the healthiest and untouched coral reefs in the Indian Ocean on your doorstep. However, a visit to Manta Resort is not complete without a stay in the Underwater Room – a private floating island 250 metres off shore with one completely submerged level. You can literally sleep with the fishes – in a good way! (Copyright Genberg Art UW Ltd and photography credits: Jesper Anhede)
Jade Mountain – St Lucia
If breathtaking views is what you’re after, Jade Mountain has you sorted. The extraordinary hotel is perched atop a mountain, and is a feat of exceptional architecture. One architectural point of difference sets Jade Mountain apart from anything we have ever seen – each room has only three walls. This means no matter where you are in your room, the unmatched view of the bay and the landmark Piton Mountains are there in front of you. Acres of rainforest, hiking trails, a private volcanic beach, water sports, and a ‘drive up’ volcanic hot spring are all awaiting your explorer self to experience them, otherwise there is always a free seat at the bar.
