Netflix and chill? Fun Valentine’s Day date ideas at home
Why leave the comfort of your humble abode and fight the hordes of loved up couples and pay inflated prices when you can snuggle up behind closed doors? There are lots of things you and your Valentine can do without stepping foot outside.
1. Board game night
Become property moguls in Monopoly or get those brain cells working overtime with a game of Scrabble or get territorial with Catan. Might as well get stuck into some card-based drinking games while you’re at it! Nothing gets the endorphins pumping more than revelling in the air of (friendly?) competition.
2. Have a cook-off
Hunt for the perfect recipe, bake side-by-side and work some magic in the kitchen. Don’t forget to do your best Matt Preston or Nigella Lawson impression and enjoy the most exciting part – the much-awaited taste testing. If you don’t mind a bit, okay, a lot of mess, we hear a food fight calling.
3. Spa bath
Share a toasty tub of bubbles with a few glasses of bubblies and foot massages in between. Make it fun with a few bath bombs and splash around in colourful soapy bubbles. Bliss! Once you’re all comfortable, might as well get up close and personal and play 20 questions, who doesn’t enjoy divulging their deepest, darkest secrets?
4. Movie marathon
Compile a list of your favourite blockbusters and burn through them like no tomorrow. Whether you’re a chick flick kind of gal or an Arnie worshipper, let’s make sure there’s a good variety in there. A horror movie wouldn’t hurt, if it’s the perfect excuse to snuggle up tight. Popcorn and Maltesers, anyone?

5. Fine dining experience
It’s the perfect excuse to get dressed up and head out to that fancy restaurant you’ve been itching to try. Not sure where to go or feeling a tad indecisive? Your local Broadsheet is usually a sure-fire way to discover the city’s new up and comers.
6. Relax and unwind
Head to the hot springs and sweat it out or book a luxurious couple’s massage treatment together. Invigorating and very therapeutic, you’ll soon understand why the Japanese flock to the Onsen. Relax in style at some of the best hot springs and bath houses in Australia.
7. Picnic with a view
Pack a hamper full of your favourite wine, drool-inducing cheeses and goodies and make your way to the Botanical Gardens or the beach and get close and personal. Just imagine watching the glorious sunset or staring up at the starry night sky together.
8. Ice skating
Cliché, yes. But seriously, who’s going to complain about skating around the rink hand-in-hand then sharing a hot chocolate or two? Unless you’re a contender for most uncoordinated person in the world, then please invite us to come along for a good laugh – all in the name of fun, right?! This definitely gets our vote.
9. Go to a carnival
Is there anything more romantic than holding hands and shrieking in unison on thrilling carnival rides? Or sharing some calorific fairy floss and taking turns trying to win that lonely looking giant stuffed elephant that just wants a new home? We think not. Luna Park is calling all lovebirds with their ’Luna Love’ event.
No need to break the bank with our cute Valentine’s Day date ideas on a budget
Why burn through cash on just one day when there’s plenty of other affordable ways you can show your love throughout the year? Whether it’s lending a listening ear after a hard day’s work, surprising her with flowers just because or simply letting him have the remote control for the night, there’s no need to buy into this Hallmark holiday if you’re on a budget. But that doesn’t mean you can’t afford a little fun.
10. Be a tourist
Explore the city and discover hidden secrets. Google “free events in (insert city name)” and pick an event that has you both shaking in your boots with excitment. If you happen to be a lucky Melburnian, there's a free Valentine's Day Screening at Rooftop Cinema where you can catch the latest romcom and enjoy the sunset.
11. Go on a scavenger hunt
Unleash that inner child. Write little love notes or wrap tiny tokens and hide them all over the house…or town, if you're game. The anticipation will get the better of you, no need to wait for that Easter egg hunt.
12. Be a couponer
With coupon deal sites all over the internet, you don't have to pay full price for anything if you don't want to. Your local Groupon or Scoopon site will have plenty of steals for a pampering massage or a weekend getaway without the premium price tag.
13. Have a staycation
Definition: “a holiday spent in one’s home country rather than abroad, or one spent at home and involving day trips to local attractions”. We’re not sure about you, but this is the perfect excuse to have a “you” day, order takeout, lounge around in PJs and binge watch your favourite series or lying in bed together and conjuring up a couple’s ultimate bucket list.
14. Splurge on dessert
Share a simple homecooked meal then head out for a sweet treat or two. Crepes, ice cream, waffles, whatever piques your fancy! Your doctor doesn’t have to know, so as Tom Haverford and Donna Meagle have fabulously coined, ’Treat Yo’ Self’.
